Aloha Airlines Flight 243

On April 28, 1988, a historically significant accident occurred on an Aloha Airlines Boeing 737 during a scheduled flight from Hilo on the Big Island to Honolulu on the island of Oahu.

Flight 243 after landing in Kahului

The aircraft, operating as Aloha Flight 243, suffered an explosive decompression due to metal fatigue while at its cruising altitude, in the process blowing off a large section of the fuselage aft of the flight deck. Clarabelle Lansing, a flight attendant on the fateful flight, was sucked out of the aircraft and killed during the ordeal. Using unparalleled airmanship in the face of great adversity, the crew managed to land the stricken aircraft safely despite its severely compromised structure.
